Youth Olympic Games - Photo of the Day (Day Five)
Singapore, Singapore, August 25, 2010 -The Youth Olympic Games Photo of the Day is selected by the FIVB's two Young Writers 4 Young Players Seth Rubinroit and Cecilia Mussi. They pick a photo which they think best sums up the day's action and explain why.
“We really liked this photo because it illustrates the pure joy that Peru coach Natalia Malaga was experiencing. After a long, hard-fought win against Japan to earn the bronze medal in the Girls’ competition, Malaga could not contain her happiness, and released a scream of joy that we were sure could be heard across Singapore.”

Peru clinch first medal at Youth Olympic Games thanks to girls' win over Japan
Singapore, Singapore, August 25, 2010 - Peru scored a 3-1 (22-25, 30-28, 25-11, 25-17) win over Japan on Wednesday at the Youth Olympic Games to claim the bronze medal as the competition draws to a close in Singapore.
The significantly taller Peru squad’s record improved to 3-1, while Japan settled for fourth place, and had their record fall to 1-3.
Peru led for much of the first set, but Japan came back and took their first lead at 17-16. Peru briefly regained the lead, but Japan held on behind several spikes from Saaya Karaki.
In the second set, Japan struggled to spike the ball past Peru’s Clarivett Yllescas and Brenda Daniela Uribe, who are both 1.83 meters. Japan overcame the size difference by playing solid, quick defense. The set was close forcing a tie break which Peru picked up at 30-28.
Peru jumped to their best start in the third set, leading 11-3. They dominated and won the set by 14 points.
Japan regained their composure and played much better in the fourth set, but Peru’s height advantage was enough to propel them to victory. Fittingly, Peru captain Clarivett Yllescas, who played extremely well the entire match, had the game-winning spike to clinch her countries first medal of the tournament.

Cuba and Peru relive past glories to return to winning ways
Singapore, Singapore, 25 August - Cuba and Peru are looking to the past to help guide their comebacks to international Volleyball's limelight. Cuba's boys' team and Peru's girls', who topped their respective groups to advance to the semifinals at Toa Payoh Sports Hall, are coached Volleyball legends of yesteryear. Their task is to lead a new generation that could end both countries’ recent trophy droughts.
Peru coach Natalia Malaga was, in her time, an extraordinary player and part of the country's silver medal-winning team at the Seoul 1988 Olympic Games, and she has shared her experience of playing in those pressure-packed Games with the players coming through the youth categories.
| Natalia Malaga was part of Peru's silver medal-winning team 1988 in the Seoul Olympic Games. |
“Peru is working really hard to regain participation at major events like the Olympics and FIVB World Championships, and to be always among the world’s top 12 that qualify for those competitions,” she said.
A two-year absence from international Volleyball at the start of the decade hampered the development of new players in the country and Malaga now has to address this gap.
“These girls didn’t have a good start to the sport and there are a lot of mistakes that need to be corrected, which is something our winning team of the past didn’t have to do."
It's a similar story for Cuba coach Rodolfo Sanchez - a winner at the 1989 World Cup and 1998 FIVB World League, and semifinalist at the Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games for his national team.
Sanchez believes the attitude of his players needs to be fine-tuned.
"The Cuba players of the past had a different mentality. The players’ mentality nowadays is a bit weaker and we’ve been trying to instigate a winner mentality again,” he said.
“Lesson one is to have discipline. Without discipline there’s nothing. This is what I learned as a player.".

The Japanese revealed they had scouted Singapore's loss to Peru on Saturday and spotted a weakness in their serve. "My strategy was to hit the ball near the front court to make it difficult for them," said Chizu Ichikawa (JPN), who finished with a total of 22 points off the serve.

Belgium and Peru impress in YOG Girls’ opening matches
Singapore, Singapore, August 21, 2010 – Belgium and Peru won their respective matches in the opening day of the girls tournament at the Youth Olympic Games in the Toa Payoh Sports Hall in Singapore on Saturday. Belgium beat Egypt 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-10) while Peru were too strong for hosts Singapor, winning in straight sets 3-0 (25-11, 25-13, 25-12).
Belgium's Pool B match against Egypt was a one-sided affair with the taller and more organised top seeds only conceding 33 points.
"If I was the coach (of Egypt) I would look at how we were organised on the court," Belgium coach Julien Van De Vyver replied when asked what he thought the Egyptians took from the game.
Van De Vyver's daughter, team captain Ilka Van De Vyver, felt there was much to improve upon. "Our serves had too many flaws today. I hope we can improve on it for the next game,'' she said.
Peru, meanwhile, had little trouble defeating Singapore in their Pool A encounter.
"There was a big difference in size which makes it very difficult to defend," Singapore's coach Ho Peng Low said.
Peru's ambassador to Singapore, Armando Raul Patino Alvistur, was among a group of about 25 Peru supporters waving flags and doing their best to drown out the raucous home support.
It was really emotional," Peru’s Clarivett Yllescas said. "We are all so excited to see people from our continent make their way down to Singapore to support us."
